MOAI: Connection with a Purpose

My mom texted me in a panic.

She was worried she wouldn't qualify for health insurance in 2026 and had no idea where to start. And just like that, my mind was off to the races — Would she have to move in with me? Am I ready to be her caregiver? How do I even begin to help her from where I am?

I sat with that feeling for a while. That mix of love and fear and not knowing what you don't know.

And then I started talking to people. A friend juggling care for a parent with dementia while helping another parent learn independence at 83. Another friend whose mom can't drive or walk alone at night because of vertigo — but who still fiercely wants to live on her own terms. These weren't edge cases. These were Tuesday conversations.

The truth is simple and a little humbling: everyone has a parent. And most of us are completely unprepared for what comes next — not because we don't care, but because nobody hands you a roadmap.

I'm building MOAI Connection because of my mom. And because in twenty years, I'll be the one who needs help. We're all headed there — the question is whether we'll have the support and dignity we deserve when we arrive.
